Canon RF 85mm f/1.4 VCM Review — A Wedding Photographer’s Perspective
The Canon RF 85mm f/1.4 VCM has finally arrived, and I couldn’t wait to put it to the test. As a wedding photographer, the 85mm focal length is one of my go-to lenses — perfect for portraits, intimate moments, and capturing the emotion of the day without being too close.
I’ve been using the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art (EF mount) for years, paired with Canon’s mirrorless cameras via the EF–RF adapter. It’s a lens I trust. But when Canon announced the RF 85mm f/1.4, promising faster autofocus, lighter weight, and that classic Canon color, I had to see if it could really replace the Sigma in my kit.
Build & Handling
Right away, the Canon feels different. It’s lighter, better balanced, and the new VCM (Voice Coil Motor) autofocus system is impressively fast and silent. If you shoot long wedding days, this lighter setup makes a big difference.
The Sigma is still solid, but it’s heavier and front-weighted — not a dealbreaker, but something you notice after several hours of handheld shooting.
Autofocus & Performance
This is where Canon shines. During a recent portrait session with a couple, the RF 85mm f/1.4 VCM locked on instantly and tracked perfectly, even as they walked toward me. The Sigma 85mm still holds up incredibly well, but occasionally it hesitates in backlit or low-contrast scenes.
For wedding photographers who rely on fast, accurate eye tracking — the Canon is a step up.
Image Quality & Bokeh
Both lenses deliver stunning sharpness and beautiful bokeh. The Canon’s rendering is smooth and natural, with a slightly warmer tone that flatters skin. The Sigma, on the other hand, has a bit more contrast and cooler color rendering, which can be great if you prefer punchier files straight out of camera.
At f/1.4, the Canon’s background blur is buttery and clean, especially in bright backlight. The Sigma produces a touch more cat-eye bokeh near the edges, but that’s personal taste more than a flaw.
Final Thoughts
If you already own the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art, it’s still a fantastic choice and unbeatable value. But for those fully committed to Canon’s mirrorless system, the RF 85mm f/1.4 VCM feels like the lens Canon shooters have been waiting for — lighter, faster, and beautifully refined.
It’s the kind of lens you could shoot an entire wedding day with — from quiet getting-ready moments to golden-hour portraits — and never feel held back.
